Hi everyone,
What do you think about school uniforms??? Our district has recently changed to school uniforms in the last three years. First the Board of Education held several hearing about the uniforms and how they were going to mandate that students wear them. Some parents did not like the idea and a past employee had a big article published in the paper and wanted parents to rebel against the idea. However, the uniform policy was instituted. The K-8 graders started in 2006-2007. The preschoolers and high school started in 2007-2008. The entire district is wearing uniforms and it has not presented a major problem. Staff members are supportive by buying some items and donating them to the clothing closet. My niece moved into the district and her family did not buy an item because their was plenty in the clothing closet. If you move in district you have two weeks to purchase the uniform or get the uniform from the closet if it is available. As students leave to go to the high school they donate their uniforms back to the school. Also, at the high school level teachers volunteer to take the old uniforms donated home and wash them and re-package them for students attending the high school next school year. The uniform controversy seems to be working for everyone so far. My sister recently visited the district and made a comment about how nicely the students looked as they worked down the hallway. She could not believe their were no "baggy pants" even with teenagers in the schools. What do you think about uniforms are the right for every district??? They sure help our students improve their image.

I am a proponent of school uniforms. Like you mentioned in your last paragraph, it really does clean up the students. It is my thought that it helps unify the student body and aides in teacher's treatment of students as well. The school district where I live has attempted to implement uniforms, but far too many have refused stating that it takes away from student's individuality. As far as I am concerned, students come to school to learn, not to worry about fashion and being an individual based on their clothes. :)
School uniforms are an equalizer in this world of bling and commercialism. I think that instead of reducing a student's individuality, it allows them to explore what they are inside as people, and not requiring their parents to purchase the "in" clothes that are in fashion for that particular week. While uniforms may not prevent clicks from materializing, I think it hinders them within the classroom. School uniforms also reduce cost expenditures for parents in this tight economy. But most of all, a student will never have to wake up wondering what they would wear to school that day.
I am a supporter of school uniforms. School uniforms are beneficial on so many counts. They help to project a unified student body. They also help erase several social stigmatisms associated with designer labels and societal classes. In a school uniform everyone is equal. The focus can move from social status to education. My two youngest children attend a private school where a uniform is mandated from K-4 and up. While my teenager is in a public high school that I wish had uniforms. The fad of today’s youth is so sloppy and unkept.
Our public schools did adopt a policy that every student in middle and high schools wear their shirts tucked in and their pants pulled up at an appropriate level. This has slightly improved the look of the students. They get around it most of the time by wearing shirts as jackets, which don't have to be tucked in.
Your district has done a wonderful thing with the clothes closet. This helps to offset the cost of uniforms for those who might need assistance.
